How do metal braces work?
Metal braces are the most affordable and most popular type of orthodontic treatment. They have been used for decades to treat numerous dental problems. The appliance consists of brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by archwires and secured with small rubber ligatures.
The brackets are fixed to the front of each tooth. An archwire, usually made of stainless steel, is threaded through them and secured with elastic ligatures. This wire exerts continuous pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position. Your Ilyés Dental specialist will carry out periodic activations (adjustments) to make sure the alignment of your teeth progresses according to the treatment plan.

How is the procedure performed?

Distalisation
If the back teeth are very close together, your Ilyés Dental dentist may decide to place special devices or elastic bands between them about 7 days before fitting the metal braces. This creates enough space for the bands to fit around the molars.
Starting with a clean slate
Before the metal braces are fitted, the teeth must be perfectly clean. We carry out professional tooth cleaning and tartar removal (if necessary) to make sure the surfaces are impeccable.
Attaching the brackets
The brackets hold the metal archwires of the braces in place. To attach them, the Ilyés Dental orthodontist applies a small amount of adhesive to the centre of each tooth, then places a bracket in the centre of the tooth.
Adding the bands
The orthodontist places metal bands behind the molars. After selecting the right size, adhesive is applied to the band and it is slid onto the tooth. This can involve some pressure. Please let us know if you feel pinching or stinging, so we can adjust the braces to make them as comfortable as possible.
Adding the archwires
Once the brackets and bands are fixed, we insert the archwire and secure it to the brackets with ligatures. As a final step, we trim the end of the wire so it does not touch the gums at the back of your mouth.

01. Can I still eat my favourite foods?
Of course! You can lead a normal life with metal braces. We recommend avoiding hard or sticky foods, which can stick to the brackets, archwires and rubber ligatures and damage the fixed braces. The Ilyés Dental team will draw up a list of foods to avoid and give you some nutritional advice.
02. How often will activations be needed?
We invite you to consultations every 4-6 weeks to assess the progress of your teeth, activate the braces and make sure we are on the right track. The frequency of consultations varies from patient to patient and depends on the progress of the treatment recommended by your Ilyés Dental specialist.
03. How painful is the procedure?
You may feel temporary discomfort or pain when the braces are first fitted and after adjustments. During the adjustment period, you can take over-the-counter painkillers to relieve the discomfort.
04. How long will I have to wear braces?
Every patient is unique, so the duration of treatment varies. Patients usually wear fixed metal braces for 1-2 years, but the duration depends on the initial condition of the teeth and the progress of the treatment.
05. How should I care for my metal braces?
Metal braces require no special care: brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. You can also use an electric toothbrush.
06. At what age can I get metal braces?
