How is dental implantation performed?
The procedure itself usually requires two surgical sessions, but the phases of the treatment may require several visits to our clinic. The exact number depends on your specific situation.
In the first phase:
- We use local anaesthesia to make the procedure comfortable.
- Inserting the implant takes on average 1-2 hours for each implanted tooth.
- The gum is drawn back over the implant and we wait on average 3-6 months for the osseointegration process to complete, during which the implant fully integrates into the natural bone, providing secure anchorage for the crown placed on top. Once this healing process is complete and the area has healed, the next phase begins.
The second phase:
The dentist will uncover the implant and take impressions of its upper part and of the surrounding teeth. Using imaging techniques and photographs, we design a tooth that fits perfectly and is indistinguishable from your other teeth.
At the final appointment, after preliminary disinfection, the crown/bridge is placed on the implants. An X-ray or CT scan is taken to verify the perfect positioning of the final result. The crown is permanently fixed with cement or screws, depending on the case.

Replacing one tooth with an implant

01. Can I get implants?
This procedure is ideal for patients who want to regain the aesthetic and chewing functions of their teeth. Every case is different, but the basic requirements are the quality of the jaw and facial bones (sufficient bone density), as this is where the implant will be placed, and, not least, the patient’s commitment to a proper dental care routine.
02. Is the procedure painful?
At our clinic, implants are inserted under local anaesthesia, and patients are given painkillers and anti-inflammatories to use as needed, according to the recommendations. Most of our patients report minimal pain and mild discomfort in the area of the teeth, gums and jaw.
03. Can the implant get infected?
Yes, peri-implantitis is the medical term for this condition, which occurs when hygiene recommendations are not followed or when the patient does not take the antibiotics prescribed by the doctor for the recommended period.
04. What happens while I wait for healing? Can I get a temporary tooth?
For this period, we prepare a temporary crown or a flipper denture. A removable prosthesis. On the one hand, this has an aesthetic role; on the other, it is also important for maintaining the space, as your existing teeth can shift if there is nothing to prevent it.
05. Will my gums grow over the implant?
The role of the gums is to form a protective layer around the implant, preventing food debris from entering the area around the implant at the neck of the tooth. Systematic cleaning of the gums and teeth is very important to extend the life of the implanted tooth.
06. Are there foods to avoid after dental implants?
During the ossification period (3-6 months), it is not recommended to eat hard, crunchy, spicy, acidic or sticky foods. Once this phase is complete, there are no restrictions, within reasonable limits.
