How do ceramic braces work?
Fixed ceramic braces are the more discreet alternative to metal braces. The appliance consists of ceramic brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by archwires and secured with small elastic ligatures. Like metal brackets, ceramic brackets are fixed to the front of the tooth, but unlike them, ceramic braces contain almost invisible brackets.
An archwire, usually made of stainless steel, is threaded through the ceramic brackets and secured with elastic ligatures. This wire exerts continuous pressure on the teeth, gradually moving them (together with the ceramic brackets) into the desired position.

How is the procedure performed?

Distalisation
If the back teeth are very close together, your Ilyés Dental dentist may decide to place special devices or elastic bands between them about 7 days before fitting the braces. This creates enough space for the bands to fit around the molars.
Starting with a clean slate
Before the braces are fitted, the teeth must be perfectly clean. We carry out professional tooth cleaning and tartar removal (if necessary) to make sure the surfaces are impeccable.
Attaching the brackets
The brackets hold the archwires of the braces in place. To attach them, the Ilyés Dental orthodontist applies a small amount of adhesive to the centre of each tooth, then places the ceramic bracket in the centre of the tooth.
Adding the bands
The orthodontist places metal bands behind the molars. After selecting the right size, adhesive is applied to the band and it is slid onto the tooth. This can involve some pressure. Please let us know if you feel pinching or stinging, so we can adjust the braces to make them as comfortable as possible.
Adding the archwires
Once the brackets and bands are fixed, we insert the archwire and secure it to the brackets with ligatures. As a final step, we trim the end of the wire so it does not touch the gums at the back of your mouth.

01. What foods should I avoid?
Because of their translucent nature, ceramic braces can stain and discolour more easily. We recommend avoiding red wine, coffee, tea, tomatoes, beetroot and any other strongly coloured foods or drinks. To keep your braces and archwires intact, also avoid hard, crunchy or sticky foods. The Ilyés Dental team will draw up a list of foods to avoid and foods that are safe to eat.
02. How often will activations be needed?
We invite you to consultations every 4-6 weeks to assess the progress of your teeth, activate the braces and make sure we are on the right track. The frequency of consultations varies from patient to patient and depends on the progress of the treatment recommended by your Ilyés Dental specialist.
03. How painful is the procedure?
Since ceramic braces are designed to straighten teeth, you may feel some discomfort, especially in the first days after fitting and after each adjustment. Unlike metal braces, ceramic brackets are smaller and more rounded, so irritation may be less severe.
04. How long will I have to wear ceramic braces?
Every patient is unique, so the duration of treatment varies. Patients usually wear fixed ceramic braces for 1-2 years, but the duration depends on the initial condition of the teeth and the progress of the treatment.
05. How should I care for my ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces require no special care: brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. You can also use an electric toothbrush.
